With several thousand people spread across 36 buildings on a 365-acre campus, how can UNC Asheville effectively keep everyone informed about what to do in an emergency? NEMAC is working with UNC Asheville’s Emergency Management Team to find an answer.
Asking—and Answering—the Right Questions
UNC Asheville’s Emergency Management Team came to NEMAC with a host of questions, including:
- What’s the best way to digitally manage all of the pertinent building information and emergency management plans?
- Can maps and floor plan data be integrated into a digital system?
- How can we can be sure that we have the best information in emergency situations?
- And, perhaps most importantly: How can we do this so it’s easy?
NEMAC is working to develop a web-based tool that provides easy access to campus emergency action plans—access to the people that need it, when they need it.
Collaboration, User Testing, and a CMS
After extensive consultation with the Emergency Management Team and thorough user testing, the NEMAC team is developing the tool in the Drupal content management system (CMS). This system is already utilized by the university for its website, and thus is familiar to many university staff.
The new Drupal-based website will provide the Emergency Management Team with the ability to view, edit, and share Emergency Action Plans for all 36 buildings on campus. It will also provide access to the most recent and up-to-date building floor plans and campus map data.
The site is expected to launch in early 2018.
